Why is probably one of my favourite question words. It encapsulates curiosity. It’s the gateway to learning.
“Why?” underpins the exploration of thoughts and ideas. It allows feelings and concepts to co-exist in a corridor of discovery. And my why? It’s not really for myself. It’s for all of us. More importantly, it’s for you.
It’s the question that keeps digging to unearth untapped talent. “Why not give them a chance?”, a phrase not used enough in today’s world, if you ask me. But truthfully, my why is the reason I am in the position I am today.
From Cocoon to Career
Discovering my why has been an experience, not a destination, but a journey.
It was during the lockdown of 2020 heading into 2021 when Agent Academy came into my life. I was a keen, enthusiastic, creative spark, waiting to rise up through the ranks of my career. Just like a butterfly in the cocoon stage, waiting to blossom. Agent Academy was my first real venture into the world of marketing. I always believed I had what it takes to land a “proper job.” As someone who had mostly worked in hospitality and events, the idea of working “normal hours” had always felt glamorous, a fresh, exciting possibility. That’s also when my newfound desire to be a UX designer began to take shape.
A Full Circle Moment
Fast forward four years , after years spent designing, researching, developing ideas, wireframing, and growing. All of that led me to where I am today.
A full-circle moment. From mentee to mentor. And that’s when my why really revealed itself to me. It’s not about reaching the finish line, it’s about constantly rediscovering myself and committing to the process of becoming, again and again. It’s about connection, community, growth, exploration, and, most importantly, experience.
Becoming
It’s the experience of becoming someone I’d never been before, so that I can help others do the same. To give back to the next generation, to those who are only just beginning to discover and understanding that it’s not about the end goal but rather the journey to that goal that counts.
I think what I’m trying to say is, my why is helping to nurture people like me.
People who are unsure, unstable (financially or otherwise), undervalued, waiting for just one “yes” to change everything. I remember what it felt like, looking in from the outside, standing in a long queue trying to get into a party, not even knowing who was inside or what kind of music was playing.
Why This Matters Now
We’re all trying to find a sense of community in an increasingly individualistic world, one where AI is growing faster than ever and connection sometimes feels harder to find. But that’s why mentorship matters. That’s why hope matters. That’s why people matter.
Seeing someone discover their potential, develop an idea, and turn it into something real, even if it’s just a flickering beam of hope, that’s what lights me up.
That is my why.
