To get a job you need experience, to get experience you need a job.

A problem as old as time that most young people face. We’ve all seen them, the entry level or post graduate job adverts on Indeed or LinkedIn that require years of experience, which the applicants cannot possibly have so early in their careers. It’s frustrating, it’s disheartening, and it feels impossible to ever get a job in your chosen profession.

I had always been set on a career in Performing Arts and honestly, I hadn’t looked into any other career paths. This was until 2019 when I got a job working in a well-known cosmetic store over Christmas and it was at this point that I discovered and fell in love with marketing and advertising. I spent most of my shifts assisting the visual team with displays or discussing ideas with my supervisors on new and innovate ways to sell the products, which mainly involved a lot of dressing up in costumes and blowing bubbles! I had so much fun and realised that this is want I want to do as a career.

As I only discovered at the beginning of last year that I wanted to get into the marketing industry, I needed to find a way to break into it. This proved to be a bit of a problem for me as I hadn’t studied business at school and I wasn’t sure on the idea of university, so I had to exhaust all other resources to find my way into a job. My main goal was to tackle the problem that was holding me back – real industry experience.

Then the pandemic hit. No one was hiring, there were no workshops, networking events, simply no opportunities available anymore. Plus, a year of no available work or experience opportunities made it feel even harder to break into the industry. I was starting to give up and wasn’t sure what my next move would be.

Enter Agent Academy.

Agent Academy has taught me so much, including disciplines that I never thought I’d be able to do, such as graphic design, to name just one. Ultimately, I’ve been taught in a way that means I’m no longer scared to tackle the unknown anymore.

I’ve had the opportunity to build a strong foundation of knowledge and skills, which I didn’t previously have. Not only that, but I’ve also had the opportunity to network with over 30 industry professionals. All of this has made me much more confident in applying for jobs in the industry as I’m now able to go into an interview with the experience that they ask for, to set me ahead of my competition.

Overall, being on the program is the best career decision I’ve ever made and I’m so grateful for the opportunity. I cannot wait to see where it takes me!
